The Bakkehus Museum is a literary and cultural history museum focusing on the Danish Golden Age. Discover the authentic home of Kamma and Knus Lyne Rahbek, decorated with furniture, pictures and other items associated with the literary interested couple who owned the place from 1802 to 1830.

Kamma and Knud Lyne Rahbek’s authentically furnished home from the early 19th century reflects how the house at the time was a hub for a literary circle of renowned personalities such as Hans Christian Andersen. Kamma Rahbek herself was a creative and self-possessed woman, known for her beautifully handcrafted boxes and for hosting cultural salons. Outside the museum, a small romantic garden offers lovely strolls.

In Orangeriet, the acclaimed museum restaurant, you can treat yourself to lunch or a coffee break. The menu offers a variety of coffee, tea, cakes, beer and wine and a delightful selection of the famous Danish “smørrebrød” (open-faced sandwiches). Orangerie is an ideal spot for a pause, taking in both the idyllic scenery and the delicious refreshments after a visit to the museum or perhaps coming down the hill from your experience at nearby Cisternerne.

Orangerie is open until 18:00 Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday and until 22:00 Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

This lovely heritage site from the Danish Golden Age is today a combined museum experience, romantic garden and culinary orangery focusing on salon culture, literature and art – then and now.
