 In what was then the poorest part of Odense, behind the windows of the now iconic yellow corner house, Hans Christian Andersen was born on Tuesday 2 April 1805, at 1 o’clock in the morning. As the son of a poor washerwoman and a not-yet-qualified cobbler, there was nothing at that time to suggest that Hans Christian Andersen would break from his social heritage to become the world’s greatest fairy tale writer.
