Gammeltorv used to be a busy and important square, the first City Hall of Copenhagen being situated here. Today the square has a different use as a part of the busy shopping street Strøget.
The square is lined with some very prominent buildings and in the middle you find the beautiful renaissance fountain Caritas, one of Copenhagen's oldest fountains. On 16 April, the queen's birthday, golden apples sprinkle in the water.
Gammeltorv (Old Market) is the oldest market square in Copenhagen. In the summer the atmosphere is almost South European here with crowds of people, traffic, and market stalls.
